Your dental marketing strategy depends on your website, as that’s the first impression will have about your practice. A great dental website can turn site visitors into new patients. A poor web presence can leave a bad impression that might be tough to fix.
We get a lot of requests for our Free Dental Website Review service, and so we see a lot of sites. The most common reason that dentists contact us is because their site isn’t ranking well in the major search engines. The second most common problem is that site visitors aren’t becoming new patients.
We’ve noticed some common problems that crop up with dental sites, and we thought it would be helpful to share our findings. Here’s what we’ve found:
#1: The duplicate content penalty
This is a common problem and we see it in a lot of dental websites, even those by “professional” dental website companies. If you have content on your site that’s also on other chiropractic sites, Google will hit you with this penalty. In short, when you have the same content as dozens or even hundreds of other dental sites, Google is going to demote your site.
The solution: Make sure that you remove any content that is “borrowed” from other sites and replace it with original articles or blog posts.

2. Introduce yourself!
Your dental website gives you about 10 seconds to show the patient who you are and why they should call you for an appointment.
On so many sites, we see a sparse (or non-existent) “About the Doctor” page. If you can’t take the time to write up a page on who you are and why you love what you do, why should a patient choose you as their dentist?
3. Use video!
Video is the best way to educate and entertain patients on your site. It’s also a great way to introduce yourself (see #2, above) to your potential patient. A short, one-minute video on your site can show your patients that you’re trustworthy and knowledgeable.
Even best, use a video on every page of your site. That way, if a patient finds your site through some other page than your home page, there’s an educational video there to show them why they should give you a call.
We provide a complete library of dental videos that are included with our Waxwing Dental service.
4. Include Social Media
You simply can’t ignore Facebook and Google+. Facebook’s new Graph Search means that a strong Facebook presence with your site is going to make it easier for patients to find you on the most popular social media site.
Connecting your dental site with Google+ is becoming more and more important with each Google update. Google is in the process of building their social media network and their plan is to connect search with Google+. Make sure that you have your site verified with Google+ and that you’re sharing your site content and blog with Google+.
5. Get a real blog
A blog is a proven effective way to boost your site’s ranking in the search engines. It’s an easy way to:
- Share content on your social media accounts
- Target specific key phrases
- Keep your site active and dynamic. Google likes fresh content. Keep Google happy!
Many dentists don’t have the time or interest in blogging, and our Dental Blogging Service is a great way to take care of this automatically. We provide custom content for your site, based on your specific needs.
